Thomasina Bateman, an antiquarian is at present writing a novel on the history of barrows in England. The book will record what treasures she comes across inside. When an intriguing letter summons her to the small village of Bewlay which is hidden away in the remote countryside she travels by train, with her companion to spend the day in Bewlay.
The mysterious man that summoned her to help is missing upon her arrival. Her assistant never arrives. A stubborn landowner refuses acces to his barrow. People in the area fear her as she is a solo traveler. wears trousers.
